5 Proven Strategies for Skyrocketing Your Brand with Podcast Guesting

By Brad Walsh.

Whatever your business is, whether you're an author or an industry leader, you want and need to make people aware of who you are, what you do, and what your business is, right? Podcasting is the NEW Branding. It allows you to grow and expand your network unlike any other medium out there today. Becoming a guest on a podcast is a great way to spread your message and reach an audience you might not usually have access to.

Now, maybe you're thinking, why should I listen to this guy? Well, let me tell you.

Not only am I the host and founder of the Empowerography podcast (Top 3% Globally Rated), which was created entirely to help amplify the voices of and elevate women, but I'm also a podcast coach, professional photographer and an international bestselling author. A few women in my community have affectionately shared that I am a magical unicorn. It makes me laugh every time I hear that, but I am not too proud or cool to own that title, so you heard it here first: I am OWNING the fact that I am a magical unicorn!

I know without a shadow of a doubt that I'm here to help women align and amplify their voices and share their message and story with the world. I want to help women step into their authenticity by uncovering their inner light and showing them their true selves. After interviewing more than 500 women for my podcast and working on building this platform for 3 ½ years, trust me when I tell you that I know what makes a great guest, and I am so happy to share that with you here today.

Here are a few key elements to keep in mind and put into practice when entering the podcast guesting world. I will also address why Podcasting is essential for your business and elevating your brand in today's entrepreneurial world.

Start here

Podcast guesting is like any other marketing strategy. You need to establish clear and concise goals as to why you want to get onto podcasts - is it visibility for you and your brand, to grow your email list, to launch or promote your book/product, close high ticket clients, grow your online social media following, show up as the authority in your area of expertise (increase SEO for your brand)? Whatever it might be, once you outline your specific goals, you will have clarity about how you want to communicate.

It's not all about the numbers

Podcast Guesting is NOT a numbers game but a relationship game… it's about networking, providing value and seeing the opportunities that are right in front of you. You need to focus on establishing a great connection with the host. In my opinion, hands down, the most important piece of the podcasting puzzle is relationship.

As a guest on podcasts, you get an endorsement from that host. You need to look at the relationship with the podcast host as a door that will open to multiple other opportunities that can help your business and brand grow because you are not only forming a relationship with the host but also creating a relationship with the host's audience. As a podcast guest, you build trust with the listeners and demonstrate your credibility by sharing your story, and the more real and compelling the story is, the better.

Additionally, once the interview is done, don't just move on to the next one and forget about the host you just interviewed with. Maintain that relationship and nurture it; you don't know who else that person might know or be able to connect you with. That host undoubtedly knows other people who have podcasts and can recommend you to them, get you in front of more people to share who you are and the work you do. Trust me, it will go a long way. I cannot emphasize enough how relationships are KEY in the podcast game.

Serve don't sell

Mindset as a podcast guest is another critical piece; you must have a mentality of being in service, it's not about what YOU can get out of it but what you can do for them (podcast guesting is a free speaking platform), so focus on and go into it to provide value to the audience. You get out of podcast guesting what you put into it. Don't focus on or worry about being ranked on the Top Tier shows. It's about getting in front of the right audience, not necessarily the biggest audience. Also, focus on your energy and keep it high, positive, and abundant. You have a target/captive audience right there in front of you; take advantage of this opportunity to the fullest.

Showtime! (so show up)

Although this seems quite obvious, I'm going to mention showing up for your interview. And I'm talking about showing up in two different ways here. First of all, I'm referring to physically showing up. Be present and on time for your interview. Hell, if you can, even be a few minutes early.

If you need to, create a little checklist for yourself as you book the podcast interview and set reminders on your phone and calendar. Take this very seriously. We're talking about people's time, including yours. You would be surprised at how often it happens, but sometimes people don't show up and don't even let you know that they can't make it. So please, if you can't make the scheduled time, contact the host and let them know.

The second way I'm speaking about showing up is showing up mentally. Show up prepared and bring your A-game to the interview. Treat every interview as if it's the most important interview you'll ever have. Always give it your absolute best. If you aren't showing up fully and authentically as who you are, it will come through in the interview. The host will know it, and if the host knows it, you can sure bet the audience will also be able to tell.

A word of caution

Another important thing to remember is that you want to avoid jumping in and appearing on everybody's and their dog's podcasts. You want to be methodical and plan it out properly. What is your niche? What's your area of expertise? What shows cater to your ideal client? Do your research and find those shows before reaching out. I suggest listening to a few episodes and ensuring your messaging aligns with theirs. Once you figure that out, reach out to the show's host via social media or email to ask them to set up a discovery call. Be prepared with what you can bring to the table, why they would want you on their show and what benefits you can bring to their audience.

I want to close with this: Podcast guesting works; it increases your brand awareness, grows your email list, builds your sales pipeline, and generates sales in your business. It puts you in front of your ideal potential clients, it positions you as an authority. It increases your footprint online and guarantees visibility. It builds your network of leads, clients and referral partners and it transforms you into a more confident in demand and transformed leader.

Take each opportunity as the gold that it is and run with it. Keep the above in mind, and you'll be fantastic.

To your success!
