Dry Body Brushing; More Than Skin Deep?
By Melissa Jones
Dry body brushing is exactly what it says on the tin, it's brushing your body with a dry natural fibre brush. This self-care technique originated in India going back thousands of years, and although this technique is mainly talked about for its beauty benefits, it was used in Ayurvedic medicine thousands of years ago.
So what are some of the benefits to this ancient technique?
Activates Lymphatic drainage
The primary purpose of the Lymphatic system is to keep the immune system operating well and detoxing and nourishing the cells in the body. A blocked lymphatic system can cause all sorts of issues in the body. It is said that dry body brushing stimulates the lymphatic system by releasing toxins through opening up pores, which makes it easier for the body to release toxins.
Exfoliates the skin
Dry body brushing helps remove dead skin cells and keeps your skin glowing, soft and what I like to call it "dolphin smooth." It is also said to Increase blood circulation and reduce the appearance of cellulite.
How to practice dry body brushing
I like to dry body brush 3 times per week. It has become part of my self-care routine, and it also gives me something to do while waiting for my bath to run. So how can you body brush to get the best results?
1. Starting from the feet brush in upward stroked towards the heart
2. Apply light pressure, your skin should turn a little pink but should not be red and sore
3. Work your way up the body, always brushing towards the heart
4. After dry brushing take a shower or a bath
Be careful to avoid sensitive areas or any areas with broken skin and look for a brush with natural fibre bristles. I really do love how it makes my skin feel after, and it's another thing to do just for me. So whether dry body brushing does have all of these benefits or not it is still something that makes me feel great that I love to incorporate into my routine.
