Starting a Business at Any Age. Here’s Why You’re Right on Time

By Tricia Scott.

Last week, one of our readers asked me if I thought it was 'too late' for her to start a new business.

A bit of background to this story is that this lady already had (and sold) two successful businesses, and now, six months after the sale of the last one, she has a killer idea. I mean, it's huge. Everything about what she told me filled a gap in her specific market; she has the time, resources and a ton of lived experience to make it happen, so to say I was surprised by the question was an understatement.

Now, I am one of those people who, if my mouth doesn't say it, my face will. Know what I mean? And this was evident by the way she burst into laughter while I sat there and hadn't said a word (with my mouth).

I mean, here we have a successful, capable woman with an idea that could literally be the next big thing, and she's wondering if she's too old to start.

We talked it over, and I'm pretty sure you can guess my response, but it's bothered me ever since, so I wanted to bring my thoughts here in case you've ever had similar beliefs. I also did some research around this, and it's evident it is something women, in general, struggle with, and it's hardly surprising given the invisible workload most of us take on - putting everything and everyone first while we 'wait for our time' and when we get there? We think it's too late.

It's never too late.

You are exactly where you are supposed to be. You are not too late, and you have time. It's what we do with that time that matters.

Start at the end of the month

Start in your 40's, 50's, 60's+

Start on Friday

Start at 6pm

Just start.

Some of the most successful brands you see every day were started by people age 40+, and why does that surprise us? The amount of experience and transferrable skills you acquire throughout your life mean that you are the perfect candidate to start something new.

For the love of vodka. Just start.

Anyway, age is of no importance unless you're a cheese (or wine), so get to it.

I believe in you (always).
