Worst, Best, Realistic
By Jenn Baron.
It’s completely natural and a part of our brain’s wiring to focus on worst case scenarios.
Our ancestors didn’t need to know which berries tasted good, they needed to know which berries could kill them.
This is an example of negativity bias and it’s not a problem…unless that’s the only way you look at things cuz then life would be a total downer.
I was having lunch with my friend Katie who happens to be a mental health therapist and we were talking about how to navigate our negativity biases.
She had a brilliant suggestion that I’m stoked to share with you!
She suggests that after you go to the worst case scenario, come up with the best case scenario, and the most realistic scenario.
If you think about it and are really honest, the worst case scenario usually doesn’t happen.
Sometimes the best case scenario does happen, yay.
But most of the time what ends up happening is something in the middle.
So if your brain tends to hover or hang out in the land of worst case scenarios, aka catastrophizing, do yourself a solid and practice coming up with a best case and a most realistic option too.
Just because something is normal, focusing on the negative, doesn’t mean we want to “live” there all the time cuz that’d be super heavy and depressing.
Take a little kitten step when you notice you’re campin’ out in the worst case scenarios and come up with a best case and a realistic scenario.
This just takes some practice, a little neural pathway rewiring, and you’re gonna feel and live lighter.
This is what self-coaching looks like.
It’s what I do with myself and what I teach my clients to do. Life will always be lifey but we get to decide how we’re gonna show up for ourselves.
You got this, Sunshine, and I’ve always got your back!
